Matthews is a town in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and a suburb of the city of Charlotte. The population was 22,127 at the 2000 census.
As of the census of 2000, there were 22,127 people, 7,837 households, and 6,144 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,557.1 people per square mile. There were 8,138 housing units at an average density of 572.7/sq mi. The racial makeup of the town was 90.25% White, 5.34% African American, 0.33% Native American, 2.36% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.50% of the population.
